Cal. I might have missed it though. The best thing I've found has been finding other hikers that know plants, nothing beats hiking with an expert. It's been incredible how easy it is to find other people out here that are interested in natural history.

I didn't see that about designing your own hammock, but I know there are designs over on hammock forums. Will keep an eye out always like to see other designs.

Thanks for posting and great hearing from someone else who is into plants. Must be wonderful living in New Zealand- always wanted to visit there it looks beautiful.

Happy trails!Joan Westhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16396313531820725640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-437728056755394515.post-10085475457535046492014-04-14T12:50:18.448-06:002014-04-14T12:50:18.448-06:00Gotta look my best for the trail!Gotta look my best for the trail!Joan Westhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16396313531820725640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-437728056755394515.post-66607256144351676242014-04-14T12:49:40.416-06:002014-04-14T12:49:40.416-06:00Thanks Tracy! Thanks Tracy!Joan Westhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16396313531820725640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-437728056755394515.post-63359742494751702012014-04-10T17:09:45.946-06:002014-04-10T17:09:45.946-06:00Thanks heaps for the info!! Just read the one about your first day and I would be doing the same in regards to plants. I am a forest and landscape engineer. Love learning about new plants and being from Denmark (now living in New Zealand) the plants in the US would be so different. Especially on the PCT.

I am thinking there might be an app for identifying plants? I would love to carry a book but, goodness, they can be quite heavy.

By the way, did you see the Kickstarter project for designing your own hammock? It's pretty cool.

Stay safe!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15814189620568745999noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-437728056755394515.post-92002730430727065562014-04-09T17:33:40.858-06:002014-04-09T17:33:40.858-06:00you got a fresh haircut too. :-)you got a fresh haircut too. :-)JERMMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04380958324541306917noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-437728056755394515.post-70897023845919378592014-04-08T15:50:58.655-06:002014-04-08T15:50:58.655-06:00I'm so excited you are starting your adventure...I'm so excited you are starting your adventure! There are very very few hammocks in the So. Cal portion of the PCT, but I'm going to give it a try, and will let you know what I think. I have a pad so I can cowboy camp if needed, and I can pitch my tarp with my poles on the ground.

I wrote a post last Dec. detailing my hammock setup and more of what I learned about hammocks on the PCT that you might find helpful, as there are lots of links to various things hammock-related: http://ramblinghemlock.blogspot.com/2013/12/hammock-on-pct.htmlJoan Westhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16396313531820725640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-437728056755394515.post-13011262102606174092014-04-08T05:49:12.546-06:002014-04-08T05:49:12.546-06:00Hey Erin, Thanks for stopping by, and thanks for t...Hey Erin, Thanks for stopping by, and thanks for the compliment on the gaiters. :) Makes me smile.Joan Westhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16396313531820725640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-437728056755394515.post-40115258868340711622014-04-08T01:11:18.417-06:002014-04-08T01:11:18.417-06:00I just found your blog as well, and I am very intr...I just found your blog as well, and I am very intrigued by your posts on hammocks. I know there are areas without trees on the PCT and was wondering if you have any thoughts on that? Cowboy camping? Also what about staying dry in case it rains and you can't hang your hammock?

I am planning on hiking the PCT in 2016 and have started to look at different gear. I am definitely considering using a hammock.

Happy trails!!

IreneAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15814189620568745999noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-437728056755394515.post-32082253421899885142014-04-07T22:49:18.427-06:002014-04-07T22:49:18.427-06:00Hey, I just found your journal through the PCTA we...Hey, I just found your journal through the PCTA website!
